What is Botox?

BOTOX® is primarily used as a cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face

BOTOX® is a drug derived from botulinum toxin type A. It works by relaxing the muscles of the face, preventing them from contracting and forming the concentration lines between the brows, worry wrinkles on the forehead, and crow’s feet extending from the outer edges of the eyes.

BOTOX® is primarily used as a cosmetic treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on all areas of the face. However, it can also be used to treat several medical conditions. Using BOTOX® for migraines, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), overactive bladder, and uncontrolled eye movements can be very effective for some patients.

“I found Dr. Bared to be extremely personable and professional. The results of my treatment were completely within my expectations, while not being overdone on any level. I would recommend him highly to anyone regarding his services.”

How Does Botox Work?

When injected, BOTOX® works by temporarily limiting muscle movements in the treated area. The treatment blocks the signals that go from the nerves to the muscles, preventing them from contracting. While the effects last, BOTOX® injections reduce wrinkles by letting the muscles relax and preventing strong expression lines. The result is smoother and more youthful skin with less visible wrinkling.

BOTOX® starts working right away, weakening the nerve to muscle connection. However, results don’t appear overnight. It takes about a week to ten days to see the full effects of the treatment. Since BOTOX® is not permanent, patients who want ongoing improvement should plan to receive treatment about every three to six months in order to maintain optimal results. With consistent use, BOTOX® treatments can help reduce the chances of deep wrinkles forming.

Why Choose Botox?

Many plastic surgeons recommend Botox to patients who are looking to improve their smile, and appearance and reduce visible signs of aging without cosmetic surgery. Most patients choose Botox because they want to look more youthful and refreshed in their daily life. Individuals who have deep frown lines (the vertical lines between the brows, known as “11s”) often achieve great success with this cosmetic procedure. Injection treatments like Botox and dermal fillers often boost patients’ confidence and self-esteem, especially in social situations.

Who is a Good Candidate for Botox?

Ideal candidates for Botox Cosmetic in Miami, FL, are individuals looking to reduce fine lines in their face and improve their overall appearance. People looking to undergo Botox should be healthy, with no history of neuromuscular diseases.

Women who are pregnant or nursing should not get Botox. People who have deep facial scars, very thick facial skin, existing weakness in the facial muscles, or those with skin disorders near the area of injection should also not receive Botox injections. Dr. Bared assesses each patient’s candidacy prior to recommending Botox.

The Botox Consultation

During a consultation for Botox in Miami with Dr. Bared, patients should expect to discuss their medical history in detail, including any allergies, contraindications, and previous cosmetic procedures. Patients should make a list of any current medications to share with the doctor.

Dr. Bared will then perform an exam and go over the patient’s goals and expectations. He may also recommend complementary or alternative treatments. Helping the patient achieve the specific results they are looking for is his goal.

Additionally, the doctor will perform a detailed skin analysis with 3D skin imaging. This assesses the skin’s age, health, texture, and redness. This helps the doctor to develop the best treatment plan for the patient.

Before the Botox Procedure

Dr. Bared will recommend against the use of blood thinners several days before the procedure to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding.

Before the Botox injection procedure, Dr. Bared will review what was discussed during the consultation. You will be informed of how much Botox you are getting and in which areas. The doctor may suggest numbing the skin before the procedure, as it minimizes any pain that could otherwise occur.

During the Botox Procedure

Dr. Bared performs Botox treatments at his convenient Coral Gables, FL location, welcoming patients from all over South Florida. Topical anesthesia may be used if the patient requests it.

Using a thin needle, a tiny amount of Botox is placed into specific facial muscles to relax unwanted wrinkles. The depth of wrinkles and other factors will determine how many injections and units of Botox are needed.

The entire procedure usually takes only minutes to perform and most patients are able to return to work or other activities immediately.

After the Botox Procedure

Since Botox needs time to settle, patients should wait at least four to six hours before sleeping or lying down. This is because the toxins from the injection can initially travel to muscles like the zygomaticus (smile muscles) and cause drooping. Patients who have undergone Botox should keep their head elevated and avoid exercise for the first day. During this period, patients should also refrain from applying any ice to the area.

Risks & Side Effects of Botox

Patients should always be aware of the risks involved with any cosmetic procedure, including Botox. When performed by a reputable and board-certified facial plastic surgeon, risks are kept to a minimum. However, it is important to understand the potential side effects of treatment.

Some of the more common side effects include mild bruising, swelling, and headaches. Other possible risks of Botox injections include blurred vision, allergic reaction, difficulty swallowing, and drooping eyelids. These, however, are very rare when the injections are performed by a reputable doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions about Botox

How is Botox injected?

Botox is placed using a very small needle. To minimize the chances of bruising and to provide maximum comfort, an icepack is placed over the skin before the procedure. Patients can return to work immediately but should refrain from exercising that day.

How long does Botox last?

Botox results last around three to six months. However, with regular treatment, the effects can last longer between injection sessions. Patients should practice good skin care habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep their skin and face looking as young as possible.

What age is good to start Botox?

Most Botox patients start receiving treatments around age 30, and some begin in their 20s before deep lines and wrinkles start to form. Others begin in their 40s or even 50s. However, it is recommended that patients start Botox before fine lines have deepened. When used as a preventative measure, Botox can help patients avoid developing permanent wrinkles.

What areas of the face can be treated with Botox?

Botox is typically used to treat forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines.

What Botox office is near me?

If you live near Miami, FL, Dr. Anthony Bared offers Botox among its services and is conveniently located at 6280 Sunset Dr #506, Miami, FL 33143.

Is Botox safe to use for wrinkles?

Yes, Botox is a safe treatment that has been on the market for decades. It has been extensively tested and millions of doses are given each year.

Do wrinkles get worse after Botox?

While patients will see their fine lines return after the effects of Botox wear off, this is not due to the treatment. They may just be no longer used to seeing fine lines on their face and when the wrinkles return, they may just assume the treatment made the wrinkles worse. In fact, Botox retrains the muscles on the neck and face to move less, leading to fewer lines and smoother skin over time.

Is the Botox treatment painful?

Most patients report that the Botox procedure is not painful or uncomfortable. Some patients, however, prefer to receive a numbing agent prior to treatment. The doctor may use topical anesthesia or vibration anesthesia to reduce discomfort during Botox injections. Any anesthesia to be used will be discussed during the consultation.

How do I choose the right cosmetic surgeon for Botox?

Choosing the right surgeon for Botox injections is extremely important, perhaps the most important decision in the entire process. Make sure that the practitioner in question is an experienced board-certified facial plastic surgeon with extensive experience. Take a look at online reviews and past work the surgeon has done to make sure they are a suitable candidate to perform such a delicate procedure on your face.
